Backbone

Here's the thing about S.O.L.E. -
it has a backbone.

Despite the term "self organizing" - it has a structure, protocols and a methodology.

It is not a free for all, despite the term. The philosophy of gradual release of responsibility and the nurturing of curiosity and self driven learning are the key.

kids need to know

You can tell them, you can show them, you can get them to do a sheet... but if they own it or find it themselves it will be real for them and meaningful.

Second hand knowledge is just that...secondhand.

Create opportunities for students to discover, to find their own information, synthesize and create their own knowledge.

is it fair or respectful?

We all want to be treated fairly... we all want to fit in somehow...     we are not the same...
students should be able to find a niche in a group.

Students need to know the rules...they need to understand how to play the game...they need the parameters.
For these reasons it is essential that teachers provide students with the protocols for engagement.

Teamwork and collaboration are critical elements. Discussion and conversation promote further learning and understanding. Computers are only one aspect of the learning process.
